I got this for my niece for her birthday and I just missed the window of returning it by two days. She opened it up today and went to make it and all the cookies were broken and the icing was hard as a rock so it will just have to be thrown away now. Really disappointed because I think that she would’ve really like this. I have attached a picture and you can see they’re all broken up really not much you can. And with the fondant hard as a rock this was a total waste of money.

Sadly most of the cookies arrived cracked, broken in half, of crumbled. One of the tower triangles was dust. And somehow the cookie package inside was broken. I assume it got really jostled around in transit. The little candy people are cute. And buyer do be aware that fondant is part of the decorations. This castle cookie is actually a little more advanced than I thought it was going to be. Bought it for a gift for a 5yo, but she’ll probably need a lot of help.

Why does the fun of gingerbread house making have to be confined to December? This was a ton of fun for my daughter to create. She’s 10, and was able to complete this project almost entirely independently. It does take some arm strength to roll out the marzipan, so a younger child might need some help with that (that’s for the yellow on the doors and windows). The help of an adult at the final assembly stage is also a big plus. Note that she used some gold sugar glitter and golden candy balls from a different Wilton product, but it's still cute without it.

One problem that came up was that the frostings need to be mixed with cornstarch (per the instructions) in order to get them solid enough to mold into little bricks for the side of the castle. We happened to have cornstarch in the house, but I bet you could use flour or maybe powdered sugar if you don’t have cornstarch. But the problem was that this created a fine dust of cornstarch all over the cookies. An adult might not have that problem, but for a kid, it’s a mess-producer. My daughter declared the castle “snow covered” and wasn’t worried about it, but a perfectionist might be troubled.

The taste is remarkably good for a boxed gingerbread. Our gathering of 6 people cheerfully broke apart the finished castle and reduced it to crumbs. The frosting really improves the taste of the gingerbread, and milk or coffee for dunking is a good plus. This is a definite win of a project!

Bought this for my daughter and was terribly disappointed. The fondant was dry and crumbling. Even after adding canola oil it was still falling apart. The icing was too stiff to squeeze. I had to add water and powder sugar to fix the consistency. The cookies were broken and there were no instructions at all. Even the piping bags and icing tips were unusable and leaked. The cookies tasted bland.

Is this Jungle Animal Cookie Kit the cutest thing ever? I vote yes. If you have kids around, this is a fun project, but as an adult, I had a lot of fun, too. Just accept the fact it probably won’t look as perfect as the one done by the professionals, but who cares. For instance, I never did quite get the icing as smooth on the lion and elephant as in the picture. It also took longer than I figured.

First of all, the cookies are already baked, you are only decorating and assembling. My suggestion: have a few other cookies to eat as you work to resist the temptation of biting off an ear or leg. I went with shortbread cookies. You won’t want to eat your animals right away, so that’s a lot of looking, smelling and touching but not eating.

Do not throw out the box. There are no specific instructions inside, they are on the box and in small print. The bottom front of the box shows the separate pieces, and this will help you identify which pieces go together to create the different animals. The back has instructions to decorate each animal. You can follow the instructions or get silly and do whatever you want.

Included with the cookies are packets of yellow, orange, brown and gray frosting. There is also a tube with a fine tip, filled with shiny black icing for details like the eyes and noses. There are two foil packets of fondant, one brown (with a nice chocolate flavor) and one green to make your jungle grass. Oddly, in mine, the brown was labeled as brown, but the green did not designate the color. I just used a big spoon to roll out my fondant for the lion’s mane rather than dragging out a rolling pin.

Also included are four plastic piping bags with round tips. These are okay to use, but I found that cutting a corner out of the plastic bag that the icing comes in works just as well and is more convenient for the larger pieces, like the elephant and the lion, where you are icing the entire body with one color.

Before you start icing, try putting the pieces together. I had to do just a little gentle “whittling” here and there for a good fit. Then take them apart to decorate. You can later use icing to help hold the pieces together.

Let the main icing on the pieces set before you do the black details. Then let the black set before you try to put the pieces together, otherwise it will smear. You can display the final masterpiece on the jungle presentation board, with the animals eager to pose for their photos.

I did have one foot break off the lion. I took a piece of the chocolate fondant and wrapped it around the break and said it was a bandage. Hey, it worked. The icing may have worked as well, but I liked the idea of the fondant bandage.

You can cheat. I did. I made a woolly mammoth instead of an elephant. I had made a cake recently, and I had some leftover frosting and jimmies, so I used those on my elephant instead of the gray icing. I wish I had pink frosting so I could have made a pink elephant.

According to the “nutrition facts,” there are 23 servings of cookie in the package. A grown up is going to have to do some dissecting of the four animals to get 23 servings.

Now I want the Circus kit. So adorable.

Update: I got the Circus Kit. Here's my review:

This Circus Adventure Cookie Kit is so cute. I had already done the Wilton Cookie Creations Jungle Animals and was eager for more. The Circus Adventure might be a better starter kit as it has fewer and larger pieces than the Jungle Animals.

The cookies come already baked, so all you have to do is decorate. Be sure to read the instructions first and make sure you leave enough time for the items to dry and set as instructed. It’s going to take longer than you think. Do not throw away the box and interior packing as you will need the instructions and the base of the cookie package is used for the base of the circus tent and animals.

The cookies are not very sweet and need the icing, so feel free to pile it on.

It comes with everything you need except cornstarch and powdered sugar. I did not use any powdered sugar and I’m not sure where that is in the instructions, unless its optional to use either cornstarch or powdered sugar. You use the cornstarch to dip your fingers in to smooth the iced surface of the tent. Maybe you can use powdered sugar instead.

The small animals in the Circus kit (elephant and lion) come prepared.

Also enclosed are the decorating bags, tips, yellow candies, large packets of red icing and white icing, and smaller packets of green icing and blue icing.

This is a fun project for the family. You might think of it as a gingerbread house type of project that you can do year-round.

The icing is garbage. It does not spread on the cookie. I had to add better icing to the kit stuff. The decorations do not stick to the icing. It’s cute but I would never buy again.
