    Great prints, iffy setup

    Great prints, iffy setup
    This is a short review: I've only had the printer for a week now, but thought my initial observations might be useful.First and foremost, to my novice eye, the prints are very good. I don't have densitometers and such to properly evaluate the output. But I found a free image online, colorcard.pdf (google it). A downsized version is shown (the pdf is much better) as are zooms of the original and Canon's output. The 45 angle, 0.25 point lines seem to be the hardest to print, but it is, after all, a $180 laser. Not too shabby. The rest of the image looks good, no banding or splotching. Skin tones, sorry, I can't tell. I printed it on both coated stock and normal 20 lb 98 (changing the quality in the preferences) and the results looked similar.The speed per page is fast, like 6 seconds Click Print-to-Done (compared to 40+ seconds on my old HP6P and HP Deskjet 5550 -- the first being a remarkable workhorse, the second being junk). Regardless, I'm just using the Canon for home use.I can't comment on the cost per page, but before I bought it I verified that non-Canon cartridges were available, so I am hopeful there. Otherwise, as someone said, it's almost cheaper to just buy a new printer -- give away the razor, sell the blades, eh?Now the iffy part. I'm fairly adept at computers (PCs only), and this printer might be hard for a non-tech person to set up, at least wirelessly. I used the display to enter my networking IP info, and that took some back-and-forth before I figured it out. My mistake was in assuming that native Win10 drivers would work OK : wrong. And maybe I needed to RTFM? Anyway, initially I just networked it and did a search for the printer, Win10 then found it online (using "Add Printers", and automatically installed the drivers, but I could not print to it. Long story (an hour), I had to uninstall and use the downloaded Setup routine from Canon (the CD had outdated drivers, d/l is 2.10). That is, after you set it up on the network, make sure you use the setup with the "Canon GPlus_UFRII_Driver." The "IPP Class Driver" does not work.Also, when it prints, there is a noticeable "hot electrical" smell, so be warned about that. No big deal, but I was a bit worried at first. Oh, and it's rather heavy. No paper jams or anything yet.Some things I don't really like (or haven't 't figured out): One is the manual feed. It's just one sheet, and when you insert the paper the printer sucks it in, waiting. You can't see that it's there, and I don't yet know how to get it out if I make a mistake. My HP6P manual feed was like an external tray, capable of multiple sheets, much better. Second, the Preferences dialogs are really involved, which is both good and bad. E.g., the paper tray designations. It doesn't say Manual, so I tend to choose the wrong one. But the dialogs seem to be powerful. Again, I just need to study them, but it's a learning curve for sure.I will add info after I use it for awhile. But so far, quite happy, and would definitely recommend.

    5.0 out of 5 stars WHY did I wait so long to get a Canon color laser printer ??? Magnificent, Wonderful, Paradisical !
    Reviewed in the United States on May 8, 2020
    Yes, like many of you, I have tolerated ink jet printers ever since the dawn of the computer era began … well, before that it was the impact printer which would print carbon copies. But, I'm dating myself. Ink jet printers were okay … did the job … but if I wanted a real quality print I would have to save my work on a thumb drive and truck on down to the library to use their laser printers at 50 cents per page. Not very convenient. THEN … Corona Virus shut down our libraries, so I'm completely stuck, unable to complete my project. So, I finally bit the bullet and bought this marvelous printer, after having done hours of research, reading reviews, ad nauseum.

    Sure, there are a number of negative reviews for this printer. And for all printers to be honest. But trust me when I tell you this: If "I" can set this printer up on a wireless network, ANY idiot can do it !!

    On Page 7 of the "Getting Started" booklet that comes with the printer, there is a very helpful hint. In a box it says: "To view a video guide on the process" … and guides me to a website with a step-by-step, easy-to-follow video that literally walks me through the process. No tearing out my hair. No crying. No cussing. No calling my tech-wizard son for help !! I did hold my breath a few times there, just not trusting myself to have done it right but Holy Moly … there she goes !! First print … PERFECT !! And FAST !! Then I tried double-sided printing … Oh My Goodness … it prints both sides of the page IN BEAUTIFUL COLOR … in like 2 seconds.

    I have ordered a high-speed USB cable just because I'm still a little bit paranoid about sending my data up to Never-Never-Land in the Cloud, especially if it is a sensitive document, but meanwhile wireless printing is flawless.

    The only con is getting this mother out of the box. Holy Smokes … Unless you're a weight lifter, plan on having an extra set of hands. Between the weight of it, the bulk, and the massive quantities of Styrofoam to protect it, I could not do it alone.

    Once out of the box, I had it up and printing in under 2 hours. But, I took my time and watched the set-up video repeatedly before I began. YOU could probably do it in 30 minutes.

    Do yourself a favor. Order this printer. It's my Mother's Day gift to myself.

    HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY TO ME !!

    =======================

    ONE WEEK LATER … My review above evidently was premature … It quit printing for no apparent reason. I tried everything in and out of the book. Finally as a last resort, I called Canon Tech Support. The man was helpful, patient, knowledgeable and very kindly walked me through some setup steps I had missed. Now she works like a charm. FAST, dependable and absolutely flawless beautiful prints.
