About Mode: Training collars are used to train the dogs instead of punishing. This collar has three options to train the dogs, Beep, vibration and Static shock. And the static shock will always be the last source to use. We'd like to recommend our strong vibration training collar as well if you don't want to use static shock collar. About Range: The dog training collar is including transmitter and receiver; transmitter transmits the signal to receiver through radio wave. a. Depending on the way holding the transmitter, the range of radio wave may vary. Hold the transmitter in a horizontal position away from your body to achieve optimum range. b. Terrain, weather, vegetation, transmission from other radio devices, and other factors will affect the range of your Remote Trainer. About charging: a. Please charge the transmitter and receiver for 2 hours when you get the product for the first time. If the transmitter and receiver in low power status, please charge them for 2 hours at most. b. Don't charge the product under circumstance of high-temperature. c. The device is not waterproof and in any case, if it may get wet, the customer should stop to use the device until they make sure it’s dry.

Overall a great product
4 Stars
Overall a great product
I've been using this product for a little over a week now and am quite satisfied. With that said, lets get into the full review:The Good:1. The collar unit is advertised as being waterproof which is a huge plus considering I'm from New England which is very wet for about 2/3's of the year! Unfortunately, I haven't really put the manufacturer's claim of being "waterproof" to the test other than using it in some light rain, but so far so good. Short of having my dog Henry jump into the pool with the collar on, I'm not so sure I really want to find out if it's truly waterproof all that bad! Lol. But I'm sure it would probably work fine as the charging port and pairing button port are both plugged with rubber tabs as you can see from the pictures in this review.2. The product is advertised as having a 300 meter range which is great! It's a comfort to know that it has quite a reach for when I need it!3. The blue glow display is very easy to read and straight forward. The operation of the remote is very user-friendly and intuitive. Once you read the instructions on how to use it, it's not something you'll ever forget. It's just super easy! However, I would certainly STRONGLY suggest that anyone who is buying a shock collar for the first time and/or are first time dog owners to read the ENTIRE instruction sheet as there are some good (and rather straightforward) training tips to help dog owners not needlessly abuse a device such as this that can be more harmful to your pet than good if you don't know what your doing... So please, anyone that's new to these, PLEASE PLEASE do some reading up on how to properly use and train your pet with this type of product. This is NOT something you want to be very cavalier with.4. The nylon collar seems to be of relatively good quality and construction. My only concern is the plastic clasp. It's rather small for the intended size of dog this collar is aimed at training. My Yellow Labrador, Henry, is 75lbs and when he begins pulling on the leash, I do worry that the clasp could potentially give out eventually.5. The device is packed with a number of useful features including: a fob style light for finding car keys at night etc., a red-light beacon mode that causes the receiver on the collar to flash a red light to aid in finding your dog in low light conditions. There is also an audible beep mode which allows the user to track their dog's location by sound. And finally, you have both a vibration correction mode, and a static shock correction mode. From my personal experience, the vibration mode seems to be perfectly adequate 99.9% of the time. I try to avoid using the static shock as much as possible because frankly if there's not a need for it, and the vibration mode works just fine instead, there is no reason to cause my pet discomfort. After all, the entire point of this collar is to train your pet, not as a punishment tool.6. Both the vibration mode and static shock mode have adjustable intensities ranging from 0-100. Adjustable intensity is always a good thing so that you are able to use the LEAST amount of intensity necessary to correct behavior. Once again, the aim is to train and encourage compliance, not punish.7. The unit also comes with a second set of replacement collar prongs in case the default ones either get damaged, too dirty, or what have you. I would definitely recommend using some rubbing alcohol and a cloth to periodically wipe the 2 metal contact prongs, both to keep them clean, and also keep it sanitary for your dog.Overall a great product so far, and for $35 I would certainly recommend this to everyone. And now the bad:The Bad:1. While both the charging port and device pairing port have rubber plugs, unfortunately they are located on the side of the collar underneath where the nylon collar runs. This causes the user to constantly have to remove the collar from the unit to gain access to the charging port which is quite annoying and just a poor design flaw in my honest opinion. I understand that the goal was to keep the charging port and pairing port out of the way from anything that would possibly disengage the rubber plugs from protecting the ports from water, but still... It's rather annoying to have to keep removing the collar from the unit to charge it.2. While the remote works great, it was not designed to be very durable. Frankly, if this fell out of my pocket on to pavement, I think it would break. Bottom line, this remote is NOT impact resistant at all.3. As stated earlier, while the collar is made from an adequate grade of nylon material, I have strong reservations as to how long the plastic clasp will last before giving out.4. When it comes to electronic devices, I'm all about longevity. I use flashlights all the time, and would rather spend money on a nice rechargble flashlight like an Olight, Surefire, Streamlight, etc. and have the comfort of knowing that not only is the device rechargeable, but once the battery finally dies, I can purchase another one, and be good for quite a long time again. Unfortunately, that is not the case with this device. Neither the collar or remote seem to be designed to replace the battery. This means once either the collar unit, or remote stop holding a charge, you are going to either be forced to attempt to contact the company and mail the product in for service (at a cost I'm sure!), or just simply purchase another product. I don't care for that kind of design. I would have rather seen this product utilize a common lithium ion rechargeable battery so that this product could potentially last indefinitely.5. The audible beep mode is not nearly powerful enough to hear your dog beyond approximately 30 feet away. Beyond that, you're probably not going to be able to hear the beeps anymore... So while it's a good idea, the execution was severely lacking, and unfortunately makes this mode have VERY limited use.6. While having an adjustable intensity for both the vibrate and static shock modes are a great thing, having the ability to adjust the intensity literally in increments of "1" from 0-100 is OVERKILL. Having the ability to go from 39, to 40, to 41.... and so on up to 100 is just ridiculous. It's completely unnecessary to have 100 intensity options. It would have been more practical to make the intensity meter go up in increments of 10 than increments of 1 on a scale of 0-100. It's just silly.7. Lastly, the blinking red light beacon mode on the collar is not very bright or eye catching at all. In fact, unless it's nearly pitch black, you're probably not going to see it at all. You can see the red light in the picture I've taken displaying the remote next to the collar. Ultimately, I would have liked to see a much brighter light that would catch the user's eye from a distance. After all, this mode was intended for the owner to locate his pet at night. Conclusion:While some of the features are either impractical, or maybe even poorly executed in some instances, the device works great where it counts the most. And while having a non-replaceable battery construction and a non-drop resistant remote are definitely hits to this products overall design, it's still a great product at only $35 and will certainly accomplish your goal of training your beloved dog! Recommended.****UPDATE 5/4/2017*****I've only used this product for a couple weeks now and the D-ring to which you connect your leash to has broken. To my utter surprise, this D-ring is made from plastic, NOT steel! Completely unacceptable... Clearly the electronic portion of this collar is designed for larger dogs, and the instruction provided with the product explicitly instruct the user to not use any other collar with any metal parts while using this e-collar. How in the world this company thought it was a good idea to make the D-ring from plastic and not steel is beyond me. I'm very unhappy and am just extremely greatful that my dog was not near a busy roadway when this collar broke! I also went to my local pet supply store to see about getting another identically sized collar to replace the one that comes with the product, and it seems this collar falls somewhere directly between a small dog collar and a typical large collar. So no luck finding a replacement collar with a PROPERLY constructed D-ring to hook my leash to. I will certainly be contacting the company about this. Update to follow as soon as I find a resolution. As a result, I'm amending my review from a 5-star to a 3 star. After all, this IS a "training collar", and constructing an essential part of the collar like the D-ring that you fasten your leash to from plastic is just nothing short of idiotic! BUYER BEWARE!UPDATE: 5/8/2017I contacted iTronics through Amazon and they stated that users are advised against connecting a lead to the e-collar because it will put excessive pressure on the electronic contacts. They instead advise to use a secondary (non-metallic) collar if you want to have your dog on a leash while wearing the e-collar. iTronics was willing to ship a new collar at no cost. Very good customer service. I will amend this review to 4-stars because of the customer service.

This adds to my review of 02 April 17.
Now, four months later I continue to be impressed with quality and reliability of the iTronics PET998DRB Training collar. Its numerous optional features and 300 meter range provide a great deal of flexibility for various training agendas. One of the most impressive factors in my experience with this product has been the outstanding customer service and support iTronics provides in order to insure maximum efficiency and satisfaction with their training collar. After about two months use, the receiver came off of the collar and was lost. I think it must have gotten hung up because it seemed to be well-secured by the retaining tabs on the receiver. In any case, due to their excellent customer support and my satisfaction with the original collar, I did not hesitate to purchase it again. This time however, I elected to buy the PET998DRB2, 2-dog option so I would have a spare in the future. After placing my order, iTronics again sent an e-mail inquiring about my experience with the collar and providing contacts for questions and concerns. I informed them of my satisfaction and why I needed another one. When they learned the receiver had come off, they immediately sent a replacement receiver without me requesting it. I reiterated that I didn’t hold them accountable for the loss of the original receiver as it seemed well-secured but offered the information only to identify a possible trend with other users. However, they replaced it nevertheless. This demonstration of their strong commitment to customer satisfaction is highly commendable. As products become more technical, timely and efficient customer service becomes increasingly critical to the purchasing decision. In this regard, iTronics has proven to have been an excellent choice. Meanwhile, the replacement collar continues to perform flawlessly.

INITIAL 02 April 2017 REVIEW FOLLOWS:

I have to start by saying I’ve only used this collar for a very short time so value my comments accordingly. So far this collar is working very well. Like most things it’s important to study the instructions to understand its proper use and limitations. Most important is the warning that these collars should never be used on aggressive dogs. In addition, there are a lot of informational videos online. The components are light-weight but seemingly well-made. Like any product you have to familiarize yourself with the location of the function buttons on the transmitter, but once you do they’re pretty straight forward. The mode button is the largest and allows selection between the LIGHT mode, which simply activates the red light on the receiver; BEEPER; VIBRATE and STATIC SHOCK. The side buttons adjust the intensity of the VIBRATE and STATIC SHOCK modes only. The intensity range is from 0 to 100. As a point of reference, I use 25 to 30 and find it is still mild enough to gain attention and yet not cause pain or fear which would totally ruin the training session. I always try the settings on myself to insure I know what degree of correction is being delivered before making any changes. The LIGHT SYMBOL button on the transmitter activates an LED mini-flashlight on top of the transmitter. The 1/2 button is for two receiver capable units and finally the Y button transmits the selected mode.

The collar is the “snap buckle” type which I find convenient because once it’s adjusted and secured; you can simply snap it on and not have to worry about finding the right hole for a proper fit; which is essential to proper operation of the collar. One drawback is that the LCD mode icons on the transmitter are a little small for us old guys. However, it’s easy to compensate for this by learning the relative positions on the screen for selected modes, e.g. LIGHT is the farthest to the right, BEEPER is over the ones column of the LCD 100 intensity scale, VIBRATE is over the tens column and STATIC SHOCK is the farthest to the left over the hundreds column. It also helped me to note that the severity of the corrections are displayed from right to left, i.e. LIGHT is farthest right and STATIC SHOCK is farthest left. I only use one receiver but similarly you could reference the CHANNEL 1 and CHANNEL 2 icons by whether it was at the center of the ones column digit or at the top. The LOW BATTERY indicator is at the bottom left of the screen.

The receivers charging port and the reset hole, to pair the transmitter and receiver, are located under a small rubber flap with two small protective rubber plugs on the side of the receiver and are additionally covered by the collar strap which is easily removed for access. This small protective flap could be the problem stated in some reviews about water damage failures. If this protective cover becomes damaged, compromised or out of position, I can see that this might cause a problem. However, I haven’t used it in wet conditions so I can’t evaluate its degree of significance. I should add that though they say it’s rainproof, they also qualify this stating that it’s water-resistant not waterproof and further caution that this rubber cover must be in the proper position.

Additionally, to conserve battery power the transmitter goes into STANDBY mode after 20 seconds and turns off after 20 minutes of non-use. The receiver goes into STANDBY after 4 minutes of no movement. Pushing the Y button on the transmitter or movement of the receiver activates it again. Once it’s reactivated you have to push the Y button again to transmit a correction.

Again this is still pretty new. I like the light-weight components and so far I have no real complaints. It comes with additional length contact points for longer haired dogs. Also, iTronics sent a follow-up e-mail offering product assistance and training information. Additionally, the unit comes with their website, twitter, facebook, e-mail address and a YouTube link reference. Although expectations vary among consumers and time will determine its durability, reliability and continued satisfaction; so far it’s a good product at a good price.

I have Great Pyrenees, a breed that tends to bark more often than necessary. They are large dogs who are very sensitive--as in hurt feelings--and are incredibly intelligent, which makes training them without breaking their spirit a challenge.

I get these dogs obedience trained and under control while they are young, so that it does not present a problem once they are full grown. I am an elderly woman, and I cannot manhandle a full-grown Pyr around if they won't let me. They must respond to my voice alone. As they live outside, I need them to come when I call them from anywhere on my property.

I know that hitting dogs does not help train them. I also wanted to be able to "reach" them when they didn't want to come close and, most important, not have them associate the pain of correcting with my person, but with their disobedience.

This device satisfies all requirements. Once we've established our dominance with the pups and they are obedience trained (~5-6 months), we advance to distance training with them interacting properly with livestock/strangers, coming when called, to reduce barking only to situations where there is a real threat, etc. (Pyrs love to bark at nothing simply to announce they are here.) This is where this product shines.

It only takes a few jolts before each dog learns that their obedience must extend beyond the reach of my arms. I never have to yell, just speak normally, and they are never afraid of punishment from me.

If they start barking we tell them to "go get it" (as it get the threat). If they stay and we see no threat, we tell them to "shut up." If they don't shut up, we put the collar on. If they continue barking, we say "shut up" and if they don't, we shock them, starting low. The degree of shock increases until they learn what "shut up" means. This process only takes a few days.

After this, they are reliably trained to only bark only at genuine threats and we remove the collar all day. If they fall back to barking, we put the collar on, again. They learn that the collar means they will not bark--especially all night long at nothing. At this point, they often only require a vibrate to remind them. Once trained, all we need to do is show them the collar and they get the message loud and clear.

After being trained to the collar for barking, we use it for other commands. Calling them to come no matter where they are on our acreage is a biggie, but with the collar, a buzz of vibration, and a treat when they arrive, they are quickly and reliably trained to come immediately no matter where they are when we call, and they don't need to wear the collar any more. We use it for fence training, so they know their territory and don't take road trips outside our property.

This device makes training so much more effective and fast. As long as you don't abuse the dog with the shocks, they learn quickly without getting messed up in the head. Our dogs are very attached to us and very eager to please, which is just their nature. We simply exploit those traits to train them.

People are always surprised that our dogs don't roam, or bark, or jump on people, and are so obedient.

The features:
It is waterproof. Our 8 month-old pup plays in the pond wearing it without causing any damage. Just make sure the plug for the charging port is firmly seated. The fact that the collar covers that port makes me feel more secure that water damage is not likely to occur.

One of our dogs learned to remove the device from the collar (I told you they are smart). Multiple windings of electrical tape around the collar and device solved that problem, and has lasted for several years. However, the nice beep feature allowed us to find where she had left the device outside after getting it off of the collar.

Thick, long hair at the neck where the collar rests. . .I shaved the area to ensure good contact without having the collar be too tight.

My remote has survived dozens of drops out of my pockets onto hard ground. It has also survived being lost in the garden, rained on, and then found a few days later.

The battery on one collar isn't holding a charge for more than two days, anymore. When new in 2016, it lasted for over a week of moderate use. Be nice if it could be replaced.

As with any method of dog training, it requires a commitment from the owner to interact with the dog consistently and to be aware of all surrounding circumstances, and to not be abusive with the tool. Most dog owners won't commit, and that is why they fail to train their dogs effectively.

It isn't necessary to use the shock feature all the time. Often, once the dog learns the shock, reducing it to only vibrate is sufficient to command the dog's obedience.

Our dogs end up wearing the collar for only a few weeks before they are completely trained. While the pup sleeps inside, we remove the collar at night and he only wears it during the day until he is trained. Once he goes out for the night, he wears it at night for as long as we have a barking problem. . .usually 7-10 days with a few relapses over the next few weeks. Our current 8 month old pup (85 lbs) is fully trained to come, shut up, sit, no, drop it, git, stay, and more, and rarely wears the collar any more. He never challenges us, we can remove his food or bone and he won't growl or bite, and submits immediately when he gets in trouble--even for my petite 80 year-old mother. These are great dogs, but even better when trained. He is still a lively, happy puppy who plays like a pup and guards well for his age.

I doubt it would be so if I had to rely on other methods to train him. This causes much less stress to the dog and the owner, shouting and hitting just isn't necessary. The dog never connects the shock to anything the owner actually does, so he doesn't lose trust in his owner. In fact, when shocked as young pups, they come running to us for reassurance before they understand to connect our command and their failure to obey to effect of the shock. The collar is not the owner, so the owner isn't something to be afraid of.

I have to give this collar 5 stars. I have a Bernese Mountain Dog who has a mind of his own. We live in the country and occasionally he likes to wander off to visit other dogs in the area. Also, he would sometimes refuse to obey commands if he was out of sight. He also tends to be "overly friendly" when visitors come. A big dog barreling down on you can be intimidating for some people. A few years ago I bought a Sport Dog collar for him which could reach him from over 1 km. I only ever had to shock him once. He immediately learned the meaning of "consequences!" After that, the beeper was enough. With the collar on, he is the world's best behaved dog! Even if he wasn't wearing it, I could often just show him my black cell phone and he would think it was the remote and come running. Ha!

Anyway. Last year he lost that collar and no doubt buried it DEEP in the yard somewhere. Behavior gradually began to slip. I recently bought this Petrainer to take its place. It works just fine. The remote is intuitive and very simple to use - one button to choose vibrate, beep, shock or light. Another up/down button to select strength. Another to transmit. Much simpler than the SportDog one, and the Petrainer has a light built in that is very useful at night. It saves battery by shutting off when not used for a short time. The collar reactivates when it senses motion from the dog. The remote just needs one press of any button to come alive. Again, an advantage over SportDog which needed to be paired every time it went on the dog and it discharged if you forgot to turn it off. And I should mention, there are 3 lengths of probes for the collar. The longest are plenty long for a very furry beast. I use the medium with the BMD. The collar is easily adjustable and easy to clip on, vs. a buckle which is a p.i.t.a. with a long haired dog! You should never leave the collar on for any length of time as the probes can cause abrasion and infection on the dog's neck. So easy on and off is important.

There are a few disadvantages with the Petrainer. First: the recharging is a bit awkward. The remote and the collar use the same charger and need to be done separately. It's a bit slow, whereas the SportDog had a simple charge stand where it was stored plugged in. Always ready. Second: the range is 300 meters which is plenty for most people, but not as great as the SD-1225 I had before (3/4 mile). Third: Petrainer is only water repellent (ok for a rainy day), vs. waterproof if your dog is a swimmer. Forth: No lanyard on the remote. It has a belt clip - don't use it! It will be lost the first time you bend over.

None of those things were a problem for me. And.... oh yes.... the comparable SportDog SD-350 is more than 4 times the price!

So - FIVE big stars for this product. VALUE FOR MONEY!
