Pros
--This high velocity vac has powerful suction that grabs dirt and debris and shoots it into the vac canister! Def make sure that no shoe strings or other items are in the path of the vac or you will end up retrieving them from the vac!
--The removable brush roll has been great when the need arises to retrieve items that the suction accidentally devours like socks, shoe strings, light throw rugs, etc.
--The canister comes off of the long wand that attaches to the vac base and can be used for reaching up high to clean. This is lightweight to carry.
--Since the vac base is fairly compact, you may be able to use it on your stairs rather than utilize an attachment.
--The vac has been very sturdy and stable while using it.
Cons
--Although the vac weighs 10.7 lbs, "if" you have had any shoulder weaknesses, injuries/surgeries, or arthritis, this may not be the vacuum for you because the weight of it can be felt in the shoulder and arm as you vac. It is "not" a self-propelling vac that moves effortlessly. Your arm and shoulder do the propelling. So if you have a lot of space to vacuum this might be a concern if you have physical challenges. You can always switch the vacuum from your left arm to your right arm so both sides of your body get an equal workout. :)
--The accessory parts fit onto a holder that snaps onto the wand of the vac. Unfortunately, it can be easy to knock off the accessories while vacuuming. This is easily solved by removing the entire snap-on accessory holder.
Anyway, this vacuum is the most expensive one I've ever purchased. I am very glad I did- it's maneuverable, the attachments work well, the cord is nice and long and doesn't get in the way (the insert point is way up since the motor and canister are where your hand go), the brushes work almost too well. If you try to suck up a gigantic- I do mean gigantic- ball of dog hair -- I have two long haired border collies and it's shedding season- the brush system that is supposed to keep hair from accumulating on the brush ends up getting tangled up too. But I don't really fault the vacuum for that, I should have picked it up. We're talking three fist volume, and I have big hands. (Another sucky joke there, I'm telling you.) My only purpose in telling you, my dear reader, about that third leg of a clump of dog hair is that every vacuum has its limits. (Jeez they just don't stop.)
In all seriousness, I love everything about this vacuum except one. The receptacle canister is small and with two shedding dogs in the house, it fills up quick. I had to empty it at least 3 times in the big carpeted room in my house. That is the only ding I can give this thing. Ring my bell, dear vacuum! Ding!
Speaking of the carpeted rooms, even though there are nice bumpers on the "knees" of this very sucky vacuum (again with the inferences! Does it ever stop?)--- I mean the bumpers on the brush unit at the bottom of the vacuum--- it still gets in there and, uhh, "gets the job done" because the entire system's design makes this super-sucker very agile and, uhh, "bendy." It would definitely beat me in a Limbo dance. Because it has a pole, would that be better defined as a pole dance? I don't know.
This was fun to write, but I'm spent now. Just buy the thing, it's a VERY good vacuum. I highly recommend it.
I currently use this for an apartment but don't let that sway you. Let me get into this. My carpet is cut and loop pile. (look it up if you don know carpet piles. Its useful info)
This is actually my first apartment and I've only lived in houses so I feel like I know enough about different circumstances. In my house I used a Dyson and I'm not here to try to compare the two but just to explain I've had two expensive vacuums that work well. My Dyson is the Purple Ball version and it is honestly about 6 years old now. I know how to clean and replace filters and know not to let animal and human hair clog the instruments and brushes. But its not like I've used a ton of vacuums. I know hepa and carbon filters, etc.
Ive always believed in vacuums having filters and bags to be as efficient as possible but in moves to produce less trash I have compromised and looked into bagless vacuums with filters. I also don't believe in battery powered also for waste reasons because you will eventually be throwing these huge batteries away and with a cord you will always sustain full effectiveness of the vacuum. Vaccums need serious power continuously. Also, I's like to mention that I initially started my search wanting a small body vacuum for the couch and my car. That search led me to this vacuum.
Pros:
1. The head effectiveness is some of the best I've encountered over the years. Half of the reason this thing is so good is the complex brush head. Theres a hair catch comb and everything!
2. Hood lights are super bright. You could vacuum in complete darkness
3. Works phenomenally on hardwood floors. I grab this more than I grab the broom
4. This suction is so strong that it doesn't flinch when it gets clogged (rug tassels, frayed edges, BE CAREFUL!)
5. The head and the body lie down so flat that I can vacuum under most furniture now.
6. Cat hair. No sweat. I can only assume it could also take dog hair but not SUPER long because I assume you would have to clean the head too often. But I would be confident with a small to medium dog or a dog with short hair.
7. The size and swivel on the head get you into a lot of tight spaces. Very maneuverable! The head swivel feels like it turns on a 45 degree angle
Cons
1. The suction is suddenly cut down a lot more when you use it with the hand tools and detach it from the head.
It's not like it gets anywhere below great but I can't explain how the suction is exactly the same width of the hose. You know how you hold the hose close or hovering around things and the suction will lift or pull things into it? This won't do that. you have to apply the hose very close to what you want to suck up. This is the same case for the head. Theres no "Proximity Suction" Also because of this, the brush tool isn't as effective as I'd like. If the hand tool brush had its own motorized beater, it give this 5 stars. The knife, blade, thin tube thingy
(I don't know the name) attachment works the best because of this. That attachment works like a boss!
2. Theres a high frequency that you sometimes focus in on and once you hear it you can't unhear it until you are finished vacuuming. Its clearly a byproduct of the vacuum being so strong for being so small
3. It comes with tools and no storage on the body. They honestly have to live in a drawer in my apartment. I get how the tools being attached would get in the way of mobility though.
4. The hand has NO ergonomics. It's just a curved tube on an angle thats not quite offset enough. I find myself holding the handle and twisting my fingers when I'm getting in the groove to maneuver it. I wish it had finger grooves and an all around better shape. It needs a rest for the outside of your palm for pushing. I have bigger hands though.
5. The canister takes two hands to open. (I know, I know! OMG first world problems!) Its not that big a deal but if you want to empty it into a loose bag it can get a little "Oopsy Daisy!" (It's no where near as messy as I'm making it out to seem)
6. It would be nice to have a vertical handle running the length of the vacuum so its easier to hold while carrying it around with the hose attachment. I couldn't understand at first why I was not enjoying using the handheld version as much until I realized I was holding it like an accordion. Having the handle more offset from the body would also help this. Also the hose is magnetized to stay closed and it fights you trying to pull it apart to reach things. The handle and the hose are the worst attributes of this vacuum.
Neutral (you could see these as good or bad. Its up to you)
1. 2 different filters that catch a good amount of stuff. So you have to keep an eye on them. One time so far I noticed I lost a lot of suction and realized the top mesh filter (which can easily be accessed at the push of a button) was covered with my girlfriend's long hair. I easily pulled it out in one clump and was back to work.
2. Again, the head does lot of the work so you have to clean it out more often if most of your mess is animal/human hair. (another easy push of a button access)
3. You REALLY feel resistance on the backstroke while you are vacuuming. This is SUPER satisfying to me because I know its working hard. Because of this its not the smoothest ride ever. (If this feels like its pulls TOO hard, then you've been vacuuming to fast) Possibly the most satisfying attribute (to me)
4. It works so well that I if I vacuum once every other week the canister is full. So in a full size house with no hard floors house you would prob have to empty this thing 2-4 times. I try to vacuum once a week.
5. The canister isn't as big as it looks. Its not a full cylinder as you might assume by looking at the pics. Its a partial cylinder shape. Like an upside down "L" shape with a round front, that snaps into the motor body. But this makes sure you empty often and don't loose power.
6. Instead of using the the attachments I just pick up the whole vacuum and run the thing onto the couch. But this thing for sure gets EVERYTHING off of the couch. Skin, crumbs, cat hair. Everything. It's not the most awkward thing because its light enough at the end of the day I wanted a strong hand vacuum for my couch and car.
If I was simply looking for a compact little vacuum for minimizing space and is stronger than most vacuums this is it. No regrets so far. I'm fairly confident this would work as well on more loose carpet as well. The cons have not been anything that inhibit this little beast from performing well.
Top reviews from other countries
My research narrowed my choice to two Shark vacuums to replace my second Rocket which, like the first, has lost a lot of its suction power after about a year and a half of heavy use. My 3,000 sq ft house has thick shag rug and carpet, thick low-to-medium pile rug and carpet, indoor-outdoor mats, coco-brush mats and of course, bare floors plus a dog and cat. I decided against getting another Rocket since they don't last as long as I'd like. So I put two new vacuums to work on all surfaces to see how they compared.
1. Shark LZ601, APEX UpLight Lift-Away DuoClean with Self-Cleaning Brushroll Stick Vacuum 0.66 qt, Forest Mist Blue
2. Shark ZU560C Navigator Lift-Away Speed Self-Cleaning Brushroll Upright Vacuum Self Clean, Blue
(and 3. Shark LZ602C Apex Uplight Lift-Away Duoclean with Self-Cleaning Brushroll Vacuum, Orange)
The Apex Uplight has more suction, is lighter than the Navigator and is easier to maneuvre around furniture. It's every bit as good as a Rocket with the added benefit of the liftaway option and because it stands up by itself!
The Navigator has the best suction at edges where floor meets wall but on the indoor-outdoor carpet only the Apex picked up everything in just one or two passes and only the Apex handled the coco mat. Both vacuums feel heavier than the Rocket but the Navigator is by far the heaviest. Its fat bottom is not as agile so requires more effort to maneuvre around stuff. The Apex is actually quite light but it feels heavier than the Rocket at the handle - that can put a little more strain on the wrist.
The Apex's Liftaway design is compact and clever, but the hose resists being stretched which makes it extremely awkward to use. The Navigator liftaway hose stretches effortlessly.
In the end I chose the Apex because of the suction and maneuvrability. And then I found a different model, the Shark LZ602C Apex which is orange and which comes with a power pet attachment. I thought I was getting the same power pet attachment that comes with the Shark Power Pet II handvac, but sadly, it is only powered by wind and is not that effective.
The self-cleaning brushroll feature is new to me and it really works. Same with the "duo clean" second brush roll. I like it!
Compared to my old Rocket the Apex is every bit as good and better because it stands up on its own, it has the self-cleaning brushroll, the liftaway design and it's significantly easier to clean.
I'm happy with my purchase but not completely happy. What Shark needs to do is add three more strengths to the Apex and then it would a dead ringer. 1. Better edge suction, 2. Power pet attachment that works and 3. Liftaway hose that expands without resistance.
I hope this was helpful. Good luck finding your new vacuum!
