Hammer those caps flush for stability!

Hammer those caps flush for stability!
The instructions mention that you can use a “rubber hammer” to put the 8 caps in place, but they don’t stress how important it is to get those things flush with the steps (picture). The caps have 3 rings of ridges/threads inside to interlock with the 3 threads on the pegs of the side panels. I pushed them in HARD by hand, got 2 clicks until the heads of the caps were barely sticking up above the steps, and I thought I was done. The steps were fairly stable, but just a little wobbly. However, in the photos the caps are flush with the steps. Thanks to some feedback from 2 Amazon customers who answered my question, I tried to knock those caps down tight. With a small metal hammer and a rubber bumper to protect the steps I got 6 of them in with a few hits each. NOT EASY! You have to hit them hard! The last two I had to hit directly with the hammer, and they finally went in with some serious banging. You have to get that third thread to interlock on the pegs, and then the connection will be tight as can be. At one point I had to use large clamps between the side panels and step to get them tight enough together so that I could budge the caps. With my small hammer I had much more success concentrating the force of the blows on one side of the cap and then finishing it off on the opposite side rather than hitting them dead center. I would certainly recommend a rubber mallet over a metal hammer. The larger mallet head would probably work well hitting the caps in the center. Not only did the caps and steps survive my hammer assault, but the steps were WAY MORE STABLE afterward. I can also report that the plastic of the caps and the steps is TOUGH. I let loose on those last 2 caps, and I could not see a mark on them. The only marks I left were a couple of minor hammer marks (picture) on the step itself because I missed the cap a few times in my hammering fury. Also they sent me 10 caps, so at least I knew that if I broke any, I’d have two more chances to get it done. These steps look good and they will do the job. I suspect that any of the reviewers who pointed out instability or wobbling in the steps may not have got those caps all the way in for the maximally solid assembly.
