I have tried several different learning robots. I initially didn't order the Matatalab because it seemed pricey. When I saw the Lite become available I jumped on it and I am glad I did. I have a 3 and 5 year old and the previous robots had a learning curve and I struggled to get them interested enough to participate. One robot even had a visual board similar to the larger Matatalab sets, which was okay but still seemed like I was doing everything and they were just watching. The remote on the Lite really made a difference for my kids. I started them just in control mode like an RC car. This got them used to the buttons. I next introduced them to the silicone mat that comes in the set, and set it in coding mode. Coding on the remote is very simplistic, but it got my kids thinking about order of operations. I let them come up with patterns to move around the mat, and after a few runs through they wanted to try coding on their own. Coding directions on the remote is easy and each direction is color coded. When you are cycling through the movements (writing code) the sequence of the code shows as lights around the circumference of the remote. Once you are done you hit play and it runs through. This simple method worked better than coding on an app or a visual board for my relatively young kids. Pressing a button a each step helped keep the 3 year old engaged and by the end she was calling out the next steps on her own. They also enjoyed the sensor mode scanning the different colors to get different musical notes. As they continue to learn the application allows for more complicated codes to entered, but at this young age I am glad I went with the Lite version with the controller. Overall this is a fun learning robot toy that relative to others I have tried has worked better at keeping my relatively young kids engaged and interested in learning simplified coding.

My kids initially had trouble connecting the remote control to the robot but once they figured that out it was smooth sailing. They particularly enjoyed the gyro function and the fact that it plays music. It shows that it is for ages 3 and up but I would say it would be better for 5 and up. My 7 and 11 year olds had love it and spent almost 2 hours the other day messing with it. My 7 year old had fun testing out the coding mode and loved the fact that you can put a marker through the robot to have them draw out shapes. We have yet to try out the app but I am downloading it for my oldest to test it out soon and will update with our findings. The addition of the available add ons makes this STEM toy even more awesome. This little robot would make the perfect gift for any curious kid! It was definitely a hit in my house!

This is so fun for the little ones. We showed them how to code it and they took it from there. It charges well and pretty quickly. This is a great beginners coding toy for little ones. They see how it moves with the different buttons pressed beforehand. It’s sturdy and durable. It is more on the expensive side so hoping it lasts for awhile.

The instructions for this make IKEA furniture look easy, so I pretty much discarded them. The coding mode is fun for my 4.5 yr old - I was able to figure out the basic way to use it from trial and error. I’d like the app to activate the sensory mode as I think you need the app, but it says it won’t pair with the device because it’s too old - I got it last summer, so wouldn’t expect that. It looks like it would be cool if I could understand how to use the sensory mode. The instructions show something about showing the device different colors to make different notes and play a song, but that didn’t work, so control mode is essentially a remote control vehicle.

I bought this set of coding robot as a gift for my kids. This whole set is well designed. The robot is very cute and kids friendly. It is easy to set up this robot, and it easily attracts my kids’ attention and interest. My husband has some knowledge about coding, and he helps the kids to modify the codes and shows how the change will affect the results. I’m glad to see them exploring the coding world together, and I believe this is a good investment for my kids’ education.
