Satellite lock is fast and easy: Inside my garage it can’t lock on at all (as expected) but on my driveway 5ft from my garage it takes longer to turn on than it does to lock on: Power up is about 7 seconds, lock on is about 3 seconds even under some light leaf cover above. I’ve never seen the unit lose sat lock during a ride although I’m sure it would happen in a tunnel or under a bridge or even under a heavy leaf canopy. GPS signals are weak so this is not the fault of the Xoss G, you need a cell-enabled GPS to work around this issue and even that works only in areas with good cell service where cell tower triangulation is a useful supplement.
The unit can be set to autopause which means it stops the clock on the ride timer when it detects that you aren’t moving; or autopause can be turned off if you want to know the time you spent traveling rather than the time you spent moving. Average speed calculation is not accurate with autopause off, of course.
There is a free smartphone app for the Xoss which allows a number of settings to be adjusted and for the full ride data to be saved. Syncing ride data from the Xoss to the phone app is slow but works dependably. Once imported into the app, you can see all sorts of metrics about your ride as well as a map showing your route. You can then export the ride data to Strava and a few other services I’m less familiar with. Note that if you don’t use the app you must make some kind of note about the ride data on the Xoss G’s display before you stop recording that ride: As soon as you stop recording that ride, that ride’s data is wiped from the unit’s display and there’s no way to bring it back. The data is still in the unit but the only way to access it at that point is with the phone app. So if you don’t use the phone app be sure you look through the unit’s screens before you hit the STOP button or power the unit down.
There’s a little lag on reporting for current speed relative to the way a nice simple inexpensive wired cyclometer works but it’s tolerable. The distance the Xoss G reports is within 0.5% of my wired cyclometers, that’s better than my iPhone which has cell tower triangulation in addition to the GPS signals so that was quite surprising.
Note that unlike an expensive Garmin, there are no navigation functions and the unit’s screen can’t show you where you are on a map. It’s a cyclometer: It shows you speed, time, distance and various calculations derived therefrom. You get a route map only after the fact once you import the ride data into the phone app. This is not a knock on the Xoss G because it’s a cyclometer, not a route mapper. Just be aware of what it is, you are not going to lay down $30 in 2021 and get a full-featured route mapper and navigator. But it is a pretty great cyclometer.
The mount works very well but is super cheap. I don’t like trusting rubber bands and I have no idea how to get replacements that will fit should I ever need them. The Xoss G will work with Garmin mounts so one of those might be in my future. That said, the mount is easy to put on the bars or the stem and the rubber band attachment is pretty clever. Note: PUSH IN and twist counter-clockwise to remove the Xoss from the mounted base.
The unit is recharged via USB (cable included). I am recharging it every other ride /every 4-6 hours of use. I haven’t tested to determine if the claim of more than 20 hours of battery life holds water but given that I’ve never seen the battery display drop lower than 2 bars (out of 3) it probably lasts at least 18 hours. If you’re taking rides longer than that you probably aren’t interested in a unit this inexpensive anyway.
Two gripes:
1- I want to display current speed and current time on the same screen but that is not an option. With current speed I get elapsed trip time. With current time I get max speed reached during that trip. Minor issue but a bit of a hassle while riding since I need to cycle through the three data screens to see everything I want to know while in motion.
2- The odometer cannot be reset or have an arbitrary value input. This is a major annoyance, it makes it hard to use with multiple bikes or if you want the odometer to keep track of a bike’s total miles when you might have miles on it already before you got the Xoss. Seems like a basic function to leave out, even the cheapest wired and wireless cyclometers have this function. And for the people who say, “Why should you be able to reset the odometer or set it to any value you want? You can’t do that with the odometer on a car!” you need to understand that the inability to reset a car’s odometer is an anti-fraud feature. Besides, most modern cars have “trip” odometers which can be reset. For a cyclist, odometer resets and input of arbitrary odometer values on a cyclometer is a common and very useful function. Not having this function is a major disappointment.
On a related note, once the unit’s memory is full (which would take a very long time and a lot of rides/miles) it will overwrite the oldest data in order to store new data. This should have no effect on its operation except the odometer will no longer advance. It would take a lot of rides/miles to fill up the unit’s memory. Individual ride data can be deleted using the phone app while it’s connected to the Xoss G via Bluetooth and deleting old ride data will free up memory. There’s no need to keep ride data on the Xoss G once it’s been copied over to the phone app so in practical terms you should never run out of memory. But you still can’t reset the odometer and deleting “rides” from the unit’s memory has no effect on the cyclometer reading.
I corresponded with the Xoss company via email about a few things and they were polite and professional in all their communications.
The Xoss G is a great alternative to a wheel-sensor cyclometer at its current price and feature set. I had to deduct a star due to the inability to reset and input an arbitrary value to the unit’s cumulative odometer. Even so, it is a good choice for useful ride information without the need for wires or the installation of a wheel sensor at a price that’s competitive with low-end wired cyclometers.
