Cracked at 6 months and again with the replacement.
Had this knife since Sept, 2015. I bought this because of the Cuisinart name and the fact that I did not want to buy a cheap knife. We use it regularly, but not for an excessively long time. It has never been dropped or abused. We keep it in the holder as pictured protected under the cabinets so nothing could have dropped on it.. I can only speculate that the plastic overheated from the internal motor and that caused a stress fracture of the material. For 2-3 times the cost of the lower priced electric carving knifes available, I expected better. I'm going to see how Cuisinart handles this defect and will update my review.Update Mar 19, 2016: Called Customer Service they sent me a replacement for $5 shipping. I had to send old one back my cost, but at least they were good enough to stand behind the product. Still disappointed that it cracked, but it sure slices bread well. Upgrade a star for good customer care.Update 8/15/2016 Used replacement knife from March until about a week ago. Went to pick it up from the counter and a tiangular piece broke out of the left side under my thumb. Very surprised that the case broke this easily. Use has been regular, but light, perhaps slicing two-three loaves of bread a week. Maybe 6-8 slices at a time. Spoke with CS again and they agreed to send out another replacement. Will see if the new one holds up better. The Hamilton Beach Electric Carving Knife with Case (74275) that I got as a back up for $17.80 has given me no problems,Hamilton Beach Electric Carving Knife with Case (74275)

I bought this knife to replace an older electric knife I owned. I am into baking breads and other cooking and my old knife had this big screw at the end of it to hold the two blades together and it wouldnt go into my bread slicing guide very easily and it was just a real chore to cut a slice of bread. So, I started to look for another knife and I came across this one. I was a bit leary with the price and all but decided to buy it anyway. I have to say that this knife cuts through the bread so easily and it doesnt get caught on the slicing guide like the other one did and there are hardly any crumbs. The blades are thin but sturdy and the screw/bolt that holds them togther is small and doesnt get into the way of cutting anything. I havent used the meat knife yet but I am sure I wont be disappointed judging from how the bread knife works. The stand is really nice too. I just sit the stand on my counter and all the parts stay on it. I keep the knife plugged in at all times and use the safety switch to turn it on and off. The safety switch is really great to have since I have children and it wont work if the switch is activated. The colors go great and match with my kitchen and other appliances which are black and silver as well. The only complaint I have with this machine is that the handle part is a tad bit large for my hand. I have very small hands and I cant hold it at the end. I have to hold it very close to the silver band at the beginning of the handle. Other than that the machine is excellent. I highly recommend this machine. You get what you pay for and this is no exception.

This knife replaced an electric knife lost in a house fire.

I first purchased a different brand, a Hamilton Beach Model 74275, that was unsatisfactory. It didn't cut as well as this unit and felt unbalanced, but worse the Hamilton Beach has a blade release button right where one's thumb rests when using the device In my opinion this design is a safety hazard and at a minimum made the knife almost unusable for me.

I also tried using a well-reviewed, regular carving knife as a replacement for my electric knife, but I'm frankly not good enough with a knife to make that a viable choice.

On to the review of the Cuisinart CEK-40 Electric Knife...

The Cuisinart is a high quality product. It feels high quality, that is, solid with good materials. In use it cuts easily through turkeys at holidays, which is my normal use for the product. The knife has good balancer in use and is quiet. The blades are easy to remove for washing but are unlikely to be removed accidently. The knife also comes with blades to cut bread. I haven't used the knife in that application but the bread cutting blades look very solid and well made.

The limitation of this review for the reader is that I've only used the knife at Thanksgiving and Christmas to carve turkeys. Those to me are pressure sorts of situations, which may seem silly, but I rarely carve meat and want it to go well. This knife helped me to make it go well. I can't comment on durability. The knife looks very well made. It comes with a nice holder to help keep it out of harms way in a drawer.

I would purchase this product again. This product would make a very nice gift and is in a reasonable price range.

Great work horse for cutting sweet corn.
Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2019
When my old GE electric knife died, it was a sad day. My 30-year-old knife had served me well, but when the motor failed, it was done and I had to find an appropriate replacement. Of all that I found, I like the design of this product best. I read lots of reviews, both good and bad, and read product comparisons through many articles and decided to take a chance on this product. I've not really used it much yet, but so far it's meeting my expectations.

One of the things I like best is how the safety switch works... unlike other knives that require you to depress a slide button in the trigger each time you start the knife, this one clicks and stays in a locked or unlocked position, just like my old GE. If I had to use two hands to unlock the switch each time I started the knife, I would be throwing it out in short order. Safety is important, but overall usability is why we choose products.

As everyone else has said, the knife motor section simply doesn't fit in its holder in the knife block. After looking at the block for about 1 minute, it became quite clear that the plastic "holder" for the back end of the knife was not made to fit the shape or contour of the knife end. I read where others removed the plastic block, drilled new holes and moved it downward on the block about 1/2 an inch to accommodate the handle, but that would impact the blade holder as well, making it ineffective. After close inspection, one can see that the area that cradles the rear of the knife is actually a plastic insert, and it's shape suggests that it was designed for the previous version of this knife. I removed the two screws holding the plastic block onto the wooden block, then easily removed this plastic insert from the knife block, then reinstalled the plastic block onto the wooden block. The knife now fits perfectly.

I'm currently giving this product 4 stars because of the design flaw with the knife block. I find that inexcusable. I'll update my post after the holiday season, when this knife undergoes a real performance test.

I like everything about this electric knife!
Many people complained the handle won't fit into the stand
I added 4 photos
1 loop the electric cord through the slot
2 hold handle and with other hand and gently wiggle the cord until the base is seated
3 insert into the top slot and with thumb push down until the handle Clicks into place
4 in the photo you can see that the handle is very tightly
secured even shaking the whole board up and down!

Some people say this machine easily overheats?
Never let this machine run continuously ... think electric drill .. same thing!
instead .. take your finger off the trigger after every slice for approximately 1 or 2 seconds
this is also why some people complain that it is not Ergonomic to use
because they hold the trigger down continuously,
and also again this is not good for the motor!

When slicing meat .. think Delli .. they slice from the edge of the large piece of meat
and never in the middle .. and besides this electric knife is not designed
for this purpose or for trying to slice bones?
yup some people try to slice bones and then say this knife is no good:-)

I have found the "carving" or the smaller meat blade works really excellently
on very soft loaves of French bread .. perfect slicing with zero tearing ..
personally I am very satisfied with this knife ..
I have been using this machine for about 2 years and happily :-)
hope these pointers help for those not familiar with these kind of knives.

On a side note it would be very beneficial for Cuisinart
to post a video on the "Do's and Don'ts " for the operation
of this well made machine .. after all not everyone is appliance savvy :-) peace

5.0 out of 5 stars Very nice to use
Reviewed in Canada on April 3, 2015
I first used one of these at a family event and decided I wanted one :-) I never used an electric knife despite the fact I do a lot of cooking. I don't know what other brands are like, but one of the things I do like about Cuisinart products, is that they tend to be very well made. The one thing I liked about an electric knife over a standard knife, is the fact that one can cut roasts (especially the tender roasts) very thin. Tender roasts, like beef or pork, can be very hard to sometimes cut with a regular knife as they fall apart. An electric knife works really well. It came with a rack which is convenient, but does take up valuable counter space. I won't be using it for everything but it will get used where a lot of slicing will be needed. It is a little large in the handle but balances well. Would highly recommend this.
