Product Description

Our founder, Melitta Bentz, invented coffee filters and pour-over brewing in 1908. For over 100 years, Melitta has remained a pioneer in coffee, coffee filters and coffee brewers. Our paper filters are 100% biodegradable. We offer filters for cone, flat bottom basket, percolators and Keurig single serve coffee brewers. Our filters are produced using chlorine-free white, natural brown and bamboo paper. In addition to filters, we offer a wide range of coffees and brewers including pour- overs, carafes, pour-over kits, coffee makers, kettles, drip coffeemakers, and even our own premium, batch-roasted coffee. Our coffee beans are sourced from farms located in prime coffee-producing regions. We batch roast and grind our beans extra fine in true European fashion - bringing out the coffee's full flavor. Enjoy our entire range of ground coffees, whole bean coffees, and single serve coffee pods.

Works great with an insulated bottle

Works great with an insulated bottle
I had been using the standard design for a pour-over cone filter, with some issues. The ridge on the bottom, meant to center the filter on a mug, was so close in diameter to that of my bottle's mouth that it was a risky, tippy affair to use. The four holes in the bottom of the old filter were spread wider than the diameter of my bottle's mouth, so some always dripped down the side of the bottle. I had to make coffee into a separate container, and then pour it into the bottle.Problems solved! This one fits easily (my bottles have a 2-3/16" OD mouth), and there's only a single hole in the bottom of the filter so all the coffee ends up in the bottle. No tipping, no spills, no mess.

I purchased this in 2017 and still use it today. Over time, I learned to use 9 ounces of almost boiling water. The first ounce of water starts the blooming and is absorbed by the grounds, the other 8 ounces is what you get in your cup. I grind my own coffee beans with a hand grinder and so long as they are ground in the medium (like sand) to medium fine range (like sugar), you will get a good cup of coffee. Another way to put it is so long as your ground coffee has some grit, isn't too coarse, but isn't like powder. This also works well with canned coffee (i.e. Folger's, Maxwell House, etc) if that is your preference.

Another good thing about this is you don't have to preheat it like a porcelain or metal pour over to have warm coffee after the brewing is complete since the plastic doesn't effect the heat very much. I have a metal one that takes over 10 minutes to make one cup. The Melitta pour over averages around four minutes, depending on how fine the coffee is ground. It also only has one hole at the bottom so this keeps you from getting a tasteless cup of coffee that was brewed too fast.

This Joe to go is amazing! Camping, on the road, you can have hot, drip coffee anywhere. Comes with filters that are easy to find when you need more. Just put over your cup and pour in hot water! Love it!!

I usually drink one or two cups of regular coffee then switch to decaf for another couple of cups at various times throughout the day. I have been using a Keurig, but the K cups are getting too expensive. Plus I have had problems with the machines. I have had three machines in two years. I must say, Keurig has been very prompt and helpful in replacing the machines, but it still is troublesome. My third machine was making funny noises (it is still working), so I decided to look for something else.
In looking for an alternative, I found this Melitta. I had one similar to this decades ago and was surprised to see they are still sold.
It is a solid piece of plastic that fits over your coffee cup and holds a a size 2 cone coffee filter. You put the coffee grounds in the cone filter and pour hot water over it. There are openings near the bottom so you can see how full your cup is getting.

Up side.

It works great! In fact, I prefer it over the Keurig for several reasons. First, obviously, is the cost. I paid about $5 for the Melitta, filters are about $2 per 100 and you can pay what you want for coffee. I figure I am paying about 23 cents a cup total for cheap gourmet coffee.
Another advantage is that I can make the coffee as strong or as weak as I like and make my own blends including half regular and half decaf. I add spices such as cinnamon to the grounds for different flavors.
This is really picky, but I like that I can moderate the temperature. The Keurig is always HOT. I like my coffee not quite so hot.
I also like that I can make any size cup. My Keurig has two sizes 7 and 9 oz. Again this is picky, but my favorite cup holds just barely less than 9 oz so with the Keurig, it was either the stronger 7 oz or use a different cup. I also like to make a huge to-go cup when I travel and I can make it directly into my cup with the cone filter holder.
Next is the maintenance. I bought the filter pack for the water reservoir for my Keurig, which cost as much as 4 of the Melitta. I descale the Keurig with vinegar and run two or three cleaning cycles and change the filter every three months. With the Melitta, it's rinse it out and toss it in the dishwasher.
Finally, and this doesn't happen too often, when the power goes out, I use my little camp stove to heat water and I can still have my coffee.

Now the down side.

The Melitta requires more effort to put on the tea kettle, put the filter and cone together, pour in a little hot water to soak the grounds, wait 15 seconds or so and then fill the cone. The Melitta cone really only holds about 8 oz, so if you want a bigger cup, you have to refill the cone. Also, especially when you are first using it, you need to watch it to make sure your cup doesn't run over. All I have to do with the Keurig is turn it on, put the K cup in and push a button.
Although it does take more time, surprisingly, the Melitta doesn't take much more time than the Keurig although I do use the Keurig if I am in a big hurry.
The Melitta leaves the soggy coffee grounds in an open filter which you can throw away with no mess if you are careful. If the paper filter tears, it can be messy. I've only had that happen once, but it was messy. The K cup holds the filter and grounds in a neat little package that you toss in the trash. Both will leak coffee on the way to the trash can.

Over all, I am most pleased with the Melitta. It takes a little experimentation to find what is just right for you when you first get it, but, personally, I think the flavor of the coffee with the Melitta is superior to any other method I have used. The device itself is pure simplicity, no moving parts, no electricity, nothing to break, nothing to replace. It seems quite study and I can't imagine doing anything to it under normal use that might cause it to quit on you. Best of all, it won't be obsolete in five years.

If I'd known about the Melitta cone-brewer concept decades ago, I would have never bought a coffee machine of any kind. It's as easy as instant coffee but tastes like real brewed coffee, because, in fact, it is.

This is real space saver as well. Easy to use, easy to clean, easy to store, easy to travel, and it makes an irresistibly delicious, rich cup of coffee. I take mine to the office, and it would be a super gift for any coffee lover, especially practical for travelers, dorm students, and those with limited space, small kitchens, and studio apartments.

NOTE: While some paper cone filters are included, I've found that ordinary coffee filters (Mr. Coffee, etc.) will work fine with this.

Nice idea, good product, and easy to use, however, one needs to control the drip of the hot water so that the coffee has the necessary flavor. Single cup coffee makers do that for a reason. But good conversation piece
Reviewed in the United States on October 5, 2023
I have bought two so far: one for home and the other for my office. I bought it for space and because it is much more hygenic than a conventional coffee maker which I was never able to fully descale even after doing the vinegar trick. After having the same coffee maker for over 10 years I realized how gross it really is. I then just stopped drinking coffee altogether because I wasn't in the mood to buy another coffee maker as the same problem with cleaning it was going to happen.

Very glad I bought this. So easy to clean and it makes the best tasting coffee that I've had in a long time. And it's so simple. Really, this is how coffee was made generations ago. I'm not sure why we thought coffee makers and kcup machines are better. I prefer the minimalism of it and how it does not take up space on my counter. I can just toss it in the dishwasher and be done with it.

The only downside is that it's not for large households. But it's perfect if you're just making it for yourself and all you typically drink is a cup.

For years, I had a Melitta drip coffee carafe that worked well... until a guest was being 'helpful,' washed it, and accidentally broke it. This was a good replacement for me b/c I don't make coffee all that often. This is just the top part that holds the filter and enough coffee grounds for one cup or mug, large or small. It sits on top of and should fit any normal-sized cup or mug from 6 oz to 12 oz or so. If you make coffee only a few times a week, or only when guests come, like I do, this should work well. After washing and drying, it can be stashed away in a cabinet and won't take up valuable counter space.

I love coffee brewed with a coffee cone, and this one is very good. The brewing coffee doesn't drip through too quickly or too slowly. I recommend a dash of cinnamon in the coffee grounds for a little extra flavour in your coffee, mmmm :).

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice design

Most of these types of single cup brewers are the same. I think what sets this apart from others is that the base is wide and can accommodate many different sized mugs and it also has a nice design feature that allows you to see into the cup so that you can check how close to being full the cup is.

I've very happy with this purchase.
