US Troops Radio Distribution

A radio makes a world of difference

Over the years, Kaito has proudly supplied millions of radios and lanterns to the State Department, the United States Army, the United Nations, American Red Cross and other government agencies and NGOs for their humanitarian relief efforts. It's hard to believe, but often times a radio is the only way to connect with the outside world in some parts of the globe, and radio broadcasting has become an important and effective tool helping the US and its allies build strong relationship with the locals and educate them to stand up against conflicts and extremism, which in return makes our troops and diplomats safer and more successful in their missions.

Good sound and reception
I've had this radio for about a week. I wanted to test the hand-cranking feature. I cranked it pretty hard for 2 minutes, 300 turns. It ran for 22 minutes before the "battery low" light came on. After the battery low light came on, it continued to be audible for another 40 minutes, for a total of 1 hour on a charge. At the end, the radio was very quiet, but I could still hear it. I was using the external speaker; it may have lasted even longer had I been using the ear buds. I was rather impressed. Of course the battery performance is sure to go down with use.The reading light looks like it would be barely adequate to read by. The flashlight is like the coin size led lights that are worn on key chains. Since it has the reading light, with 5 LEDs, the flashlight really seems useless, although it does have the flashing red mode, which is kind of cool.I was quite impressed with the sound and general performance. I was able to bring in some SW stations and receive a lot of AM stations. I don't really listen to FM. The weather band works well. One of the reviews mentions an auxillary antenna that helps short wave reception. My radio doesn't have any such feature.I did try the solar cells in bright sunlight and it seemed to work.I bought a similar radio from Radio Shack about 8 years ago, a Grundig FR200, and I used the hand crank a lot. It did seem to wear, and stopped turning smoothly, but it still works. I suspect this radio will be the same. The crank seems to squeak when its being turned hard, and I wonder if a shot of WD40 would help.I listen to the radio quite a bit, and this is the radio I'm using now. I have NiCad batteries in it. I'm sure they'll work for many hours before needing recharging. Its pretty unlikely that a set of 3 AA batteries will go dead before an emergency has resolved itself, but I like the crank and solar cells anyway.I'm a Ham radio operator, and this radio is not real high quality. But for the price, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it is made. The tuning knob is smooth; the speaker is only 2 inches but seems bigger. None of the cell phone charging plugs works in my cell phone, so I won't be using that feature. I doubt if it would work very well for that purpose, given how hard it is to charge the tiny internal battery. All in all, a nice little radio!

Haven't used it too much, but out of the box, it worked great. Popped in extra rechargeable AA batteries, hooked up the included main battery. Spun the handle and it worked as advertised. The pack didn't take too long to charge. It has a variety of channels ready to go, and the weather reception is great. Haven't tried the SW yet. Antenna is standard extendable (aka, tunable) whip, fixed to the back. Not sure that's a perfect setup for reception, but conversely, it will not loosen up and fall over over time either, so yeah, I get it. Its small and light enough to go in a decent camping setup (mine is a truck camper) or an emergency kit. Happy with the purchase.

I bought this to replace a radio from a different company that I had and liked until I accidentally kicked it into the lake while night fishing and that was it's death blow. For some reason the other radio I had went up from about $40 to now Amazon is selling it for $150 and while it was good it certainly was nowhere close to being that good. After some research and reading a LOT of reviews here on Amazon I decided on this radio and I'm even happier with it than the one I'd previously owned.

I like the fact that it comes with the rechargeable battery so I didn't have to spend more money on that like I did with my previous radio. When fully charged it plays for several hours (after being fully charged with the AC adaptor I purchased separately here on Amazon) before I need to wind up the handle to recharge the battery manually. I keep forgetting to time how long it will play after charging it by winding the handle, but it lasts long enough that I consider it to be working good under those conditions also. Of course the length of time the charged batteries last will vary depending on the volume you play it and other factors. Tomorrow morning we're supposed to have some severe weather moving through and hopefully I'll remember to leave the weather radio function on so I can see how that works.

One of my favorite features on this radio is under the solar panel there are 5 LEDs that you can turn on to light up a small area. I find this really helpful during night fishing when I have to tie knots on my fishing line and the poor lighting where I fish makes tying knots a real challenge. These lights will not light an entire room, but they do nicely for tying fishing knots in poorly lit areas. Overall I'm very happy with my purchase and if something happens to this radio I will buy another one. My only complaint and it's a minor one is the antenna only lifts straight up and it will not swivel so you can point it for better reception. That being said though even with the antenna not being able to swivel it does get good reception on the radio stations I listen to regularly.

Upon opening the package and reading through the enclosed papers I saw an offer where the company says if Amazon buyers write a review on Amazon for this radio that they will send you your choice free of charge either an AC adaptor or a shortwave antenna. After posting this review I will contact the manufacturer and let them know I've posted this review and which I prefer and then I'll have to wait and see if they honor their offer. As soon as I receive the free item I will write an update to this review letting readers know they lived up to their end of the deal. If I haven't received my shortwave antenna by September 1st which gives them about 7 weeks which should be plenty of time then I will update this review at that time and lower my star rating to reflect that they did not honor their offer.

Update 7-15-17: Since writing this review I've had a chance to hear the weather alert system on this radio and it worked perfectly and I received my notifications about 90 seconds before the same information was displayed on my TV. While 90 seconds does not sound like a lot of time in an emergency sometimes seconds can mean the difference between life and death or serious injury so I'm glad to have it. The sound effect for the alert system notification is quite loud and irritating which is exactly what I want so that it will get my attention so I won't be distracted and miss information that could potentially save my life if bad weather is heading for my location.

Also, about 8:15 p.m. ET the same night I published this review I emailed the company to request my free shortwave antenna they offer if buyers will write a review here on Amazon and I was pleasantly surprised to see a reply from them within an hour saying that it would be sent first thing the following morning. I received the package today and was a little disappointed that the manufacturer sent me an AC adapter for writing this review when I requested the shortwave antenna since that's what I really wanted since I already bought an AC adapter here on Amazon at the same time I bought this radio. However, since they were so fast to reply to my email requesting the shortwave antenna and also very quickly shipped it I won't bother them with requesting that they send me the antenna and I'll just keep the extra AC adapter as a spare in case something ever happens to the one I bought. I'll just have to buy the shortwave antenna myself one of these days. Overall even with the little mix-up with sending me the wrong gift I'd still give the company a good solid A for trying their best to live up to their end of the bargain..

First I'll mention as others have about needing to order an AC adapter separately. Really? They can't include one at this price? That is bad business from a buyers perspective and I agree with others who were not happy with having to purchase the adapter to have that option as well. If you don't want/need the adapter then it'll work just fine without it as it comes with a small rechargeable battery pack inside which can be charged by using the crank handle. It will also take Alkaline batteries to run it in addition to the small rechargeable battery pack that comes with it.

I like the bank of 5 LED lights that are installed on the small solar panel which flips up to charge the included rechargeable battery pack. Those LED lights will give off enough light for reading or seeing at night if the need is there. There is also another small LED light on the end of the unit which can be aimed like a small flashlight which would be useful in situations. The small rechargeable battery pack is inside the radio and unplugged when it arrives and there is a small paper tab in place letting you know the plug needs to be inserted so you can then charge the battery by using the crank handle. The instructions say cranking the handle for about a minute will fully charge the battery which I found very easy to do. I did notice the bank of LED lights shining brighter after cranking the handle for about 3 minutes....nice and easy without strain on the hands. It works as it should so was happy to see that.

The radio also works as it should and I was able to find stations locally which sounded good enough and came in strong and clear without the need to do further dial adjustments to keep it tuned in. It's a light weight radio made of plastic so not sure if it was dropped on a hard surface how well it will hold up. I bought the camo design one and like the look of it. It's compact enough to put in a carry bag/back pack with little weight penalty so back packers shouldn't mind taking it with them if they have a need for what it offers.

It's simple to use with enough features to make it a decent radio to have in the event of a power outage or while camping/back packing/or SHTF scenario and to stay tuned for any information needed/wanted. I gave it 4 stars due to having to purchase the AC adapter separately...otherwise I would have given it 5 stars.

I'm happy with it!

Got a used in very good condition
Price was still a little high $65 from the reg new price of $70, I like that it is made in North America.

I like that most of this is analog, that makes it very energy efficient. Like the built in lithium battery, wish it was LiFePo for recharge duty cycle but not bad. Good options micro usb USB and 6v charging ports still have to see if it is output/input. Best of all it takes standard 6v Double AA batteries.

I like the crank and solar options might be a little gimmicky if it cannot run off of this exclusively.

Good sound quality, I will have to test this in the mountains for reception.

I like the battery and channel lock on indicator light and the NOAA alert setting. The silicone handel with nylon strap has a nice feel. The plastic body is thick but it could use some silicone bumpers especially in the corners.
The speaker port could also use weatherproofing.

Wish Canada had separate all English / French / mixed Weather exclusive channels, but that is not the radio issue.
I am happy and would recommend this radio.

1.0 out of 5 stars a qualidade e funcionamento do radio
Reviewed in Brazil on January 5, 2023

AGUARDO RETORNO...

FIZ A AVALIAÇÃO HÁ UM BOM TEMPO.... HAVERÁ UMA SOLUÇÃO PRO MEU PRODUTO?. AGUARDO RESPOSTA...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good emergency radio

Very good radio with lots of functions, especially the alternative power sources (which anyway should be a main objective emergency equipment). Radio receiving capacity is good. Construction quality does not look amazing, but sturdy enough. Very happy with my choice. Mind you, the very handy NOAA button is not relevant for outside the US, so don't get carried away by this feature.
