Troubleshooting Tips - WS-9160Uv3 Wireless Digital Thermometer
"NO" for OUTDOOR? lost connection, Hold SENSOR button on display for 2 seconds to begin searching. (station searches for 3 minutes every hour to reconnect)
Bar icons will flash while searching, icons will be constant (not flashing) when connected.
WHY DOES TEMP Come and Go? Radio Frequency (RF) can temporarily go out in high humidity or certain conditions. Please wait 2-4 hours for it to reconnect on its own.
RESISTANCE/DISTANCE (walls, windows, metal) reduces range and could cause interference -Proper distance (up to 330ft/100m without obstructions)
IF NO CHANGE after 30 minutes:
1. Bring sensor 10 ft from station. (recommended batteries with expiration date 6 years in advance of current year for best performance. TIP: Avoid rechargeable or lithium brands in display
2. After 15 minutes, move sensor to next room (1 wall separation) from station for 1 hour.
3. If no connection loss in 1 hour, move sensor just outside. After another hour, continue moving sensor back to original location.

Most people forget how to program and reset but I do this 1-2 times a year for all (6) of my remote units. Also, mixed, old, or cold batteries affect these negatively. I do not recommend Lithium batteries (like Energizer) or rechargables, for any units like this. I recommend Costco Kirkland batteries. This unit works very well despite bad reviews! Just read the instructions and understand them and get some experience.
Expect any device like this to give you 'an idea' of the temperatures, but do not look for ACCURACY unless you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars. Even AccuWeather, or, The Weather Channel, is not exact, and all of the weather channels and gadgets can vary quite a bit, especially since their sensors are located in different places (can be miles apart) i.e. North Hollywood, CA, temps. can be sensed from Burbank, Van Nuys, L.A. or even hot Woodland Hills.
Most of the bad reviewers have poor expectations or lack experience in using these devices. One does not get 'accurate' with 'inexpensive', and, you do not hire technicians to adjust your settings or set these up for you. 'So what' if it is off 3 degrees, if it is around 20 it is cold, if around 90 it is hot? If you are around 70-80 it is going to be comfortable. The temperature, and barometric pressure, can vary a lot in just 100 yards, or in sun, or shade!! A major internet weather station takes our temperature reading from the nearest airport, 20 miles away in a valley, which varies a lot from our temperature near the mountains, locally. Expect an 'idea' of the temperature, not 'accuracy', and these will work fine. And, save the instructions for resets when you change batteries (change the remote first). Protect the remote from rain, wind, sprinklers, and damage.
I bought a second unit in July 2013 and it works great! I made changes above. Both units have easy-to-access batteries; no small screws - thumb slides or latches, which are quick and easy. Some other units have small screws to remove. I recommend freezer zip-lock bags to protect them.
First, the advertised range of "up to 330 ft". While that may be true, the manufacturers instructions state that wall or glass that the signal passes through will reduce the range by half. My furthest range is a little over 100 ft and the signal passes through plastic and then into the house through a window. I can't think of any applications where I wouldn't need to pass through at least one wall or piece of glass. My effective range is more like 80 ft. Seems like that should be more clearly stated from the outset rather than buried in the instructions. When I saw the stated range of 330 ft, I thought I was well within range when really I was at the limit.
Next, pairing the sensors to the base unit. What I would expect is to insert the batteries, place the sensors and start reading the remote temperatures. It doesn't happen that way. With more than one sensor you have bring everything to one spot, remove batteries from everything, wait 15 mins, press a button 20 times, insert the batteries in a specific order for each device and wait for them to sync. If this was a one-time procedure, it would not be a big deal, but my units sometimes inexplicably loose contact, or on occasion I move them apparently out of range, so I have to look up the whole process again.
In short, if your use involves a single remote that passes through only one wall, you are probably okay. If it is anything more complicated, beware of the hidden limitations.
**** Follow up approx 10 months after purchase *****
Even more disappointed now. One remote out of two has stopped working entirely. As I originally mentioned, the range is quite limited and the remotes frequently un-sync, which is a pain to correct.
Not happy at all with this unit and plan to move on to something much more reliable.
