I'm not one to write these reviews. This might be my 2nd ever written. However, having used this for 2 1/2 months, after reading several of the reviews before purchasing this, my enthusiasm for this purchase seemed needed to counterbalance some of the things I read. We've used expensive and inexpensive machines and liked the idea of something for everyday that duplicated the single cup pour over method we were using when we just wanted a better tasting mug of coffee. The Black & Decker we got at Wal-Mart was still working, but not impressed with it. Some of the reviews about this Kitchen Aid had puzzling comments like "it takes too long" and the "build quality wasn't that good". From our perspective, for the very high level of quality of coffee this produces, I'm not sure those are all that critical to the decision.
This is designed to duplicate the "pour over" method my wife and I were using; where, we were using some ceramic smaller cones we purchased from Starbucks that were doing a good job. However, they were designed for a large matching coffee mug. The coffee was very good but a repeat process if you're working on a project and want another cup. So, our intention was to replace that process with a similar level of good tasting coffee. The unit takes about 9 minutes to cycle. Maybe that's too long for some, but not us, knowing good coffee is worth a few minutes. The secret benefit was we ended up using about 40% less coffee to produce better tasting coffee than the Black & Decker drip.
Lastly, yes the unit is plastic. It's not a hard metal like a Kitchen Aid mixer we have that is very heavy. However, it is very nice looking on the counter, and much nicer looking than many we've seen...while producing really good coffee for a lot less than the much more expensive machines we've looked at and owned. This is the only thing we found "in between" in cost, while still producing excellent coffee and using less coffee grounds than the cheaper machines.
